It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that employees are not exposed to airborne contaminants in concentrations exceeding their assigned exposure limits.  Where elimination, substitution, engineering and administrative controls are either not possible or not effective enough to eliminate or reduce contaminant concentrations to safe levels, respiratory protection can serve as a last line of defense against exposure.

Many important factors must be considered when implementing the use of respiratory protection, including:

  • The type of contaminant(s) present and their exposure limits
  • The anticipated exposure levels
  • The required protection factor of the equipment
  • Which filters/cartridges protect against the specific contaminants

In addition, regulations require that workers be trained on the proper selection, use, care and maintenance of their respiratory protection equipment. They are also expected to receive periodic fit tests.
